Though a self-described “hobbyist”, Natty Gray’s prolific interest in photography has created intimate and informative narratives of the practices of underground art and music scenes through thorough documentation and lived experience in private and public spaces. Gray portrays a shifting landscape of modern DIY movements at a time when their cultural importance feels stronger and more threatened than ever by the exponentially growing and all encompassing worlds of social media, the dawn of AI, and unprecedented corporate desire for art and music as nefarious tools of assimilation, cityscaping, and social rebranding. As with his other work, Gray’s photography mediums of choice lie primarily in “retro” and obsolescent media such as APS, floppy disk, found film cameras, and early ‘00s digicams.
